Research Experiences in Naval Electronic Warfare (RENEW)
Virtual, Hands-On Workshops
We now are accepting applications for two free, hands-on RF electronics workshop covering radio system design, radar systems, and electronic warfare. In light of COVID-19 restrictions, this workshop will be held entirely online. Physical hardware kits will be mailed to participants, who will join daily guided discussion and laboratory sessions via Zoom. A select number of undergraduate students will be admitted to this program, but no electronics experience is necessary!
In these five-day interactive workshops, participants will learn the basic theory of modern digital radios, radar systems, and electronic warfare. A beginner course is offered for students without a background in electrical engineering while an intermediate course is offered for more experienced students. In the beginner course, students will learn about signals, modulation, and electromagnetic waves while working with a software defined radio to generate and receive real over-the-air signals. In the intermediate course, students will model RF circuits with cutting edge software tools and fabricate and test the components of a simple radar system at home.
Dates: Session 1 (beginner): July 12 – 16, 2021
Session 2 (intermediate): July 19 – 23, 2021.
Schedules for each session are available here.
Location: Lectures and lab session will be delivered over Zoom.
Laboratory Kits: Participants accepted into the program will be mailed a hardware kit with required components at no cost to them. A Windows 10 PC and a high speed internet connection are required to participate in the lab exercises and Zoom sessions.
Participation requirements: There is no cost to participate in the workshop; however, perspective participants must complete the application by May 15, 2021 and meet the following requirements:
- Must be enrolled in an undergraduate science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) program at a US college or university (Spring 2021 graduates may be considered).
- Must be a US citizen.
- ROTC cadets are encouraged to apply.
- Must complete the application by May 15, 2021.
These workshops are sponsored by the US Office of Naval Research under award #N00014-19-1-2713.
